Dear Candy Hearts creator

Dear [personal profile] candyheartsex creator,

thank you so much for writing a story or creating art for me! I've requested and received all of these fandoms before - some I've requested for many, many years, and often with the same prompts, because when I really enjoy something, I immediately want fifty more takes on the same thing. *g* So don't worry about repeating things! I'll be absolutely thrilled about anything you can create about the relationships I requested.

Everything important is in the requests themselves, but if you'd like even more info, general likes etc., here you go.

My AO3 account is [archiveofourown.org profile] Trobadora, and it's set to welcome treats.

NYE 2025

It was soooo helpful to be able to look back at notes from last time, so here are my NYE party notes for 2025! Now that I have recovered a bit from the sleep deprivation of being in a noisy house with a toddler...

Overall, I thought the food was pretty successful! Even though I was very sleep deprived, having the schedule did keep everything on task. I guess the real concerns for next time are trying to time hot food better (not really sure if that's possible with this style of food), and maybe I should consider more complicated dishes? I think it would've been easy to do a red braised pork, since that reheats well. I always want to have lots of little snacks before because that was My Job for ages, but it might be too much and detract from the meal...

Write Every day 2026: January, Day 5

Most people find deadlines help them finish things! So do I - but what they mostly do for me is make me start actually working on a thing rather than just noodling around and/or writing bits and pieces. While I do write and finish things on my own, that depends heavily on initial motivation and inspiration - whereas with exchange fics, I often find that when I do start working on something, inspiration comes along anyway. But first I have to get started! - And, well, executive function and all that ... *g*

Today's writing

I still have a headache, and everything is very slow-going, but I'm working on [community profile] fandomtrees.

(And also on my [personal profile] candyheartsex letter, which is almost finished ...)

[No question today because headache.]

The Book of Guilt, by Catherine Chidgey

This is a difficult book to review as almost all of the plot is technically spoilery, but you can also figure out a lot of it from about page three. I'll synopsize the first two chapters here. We follow two storylines, both set in an alternate England where Hitler was assassinated in 1943 and England made peace with Germany.

In one storyline, a young girl named Nancy lives an isolated life with her parents. In the other, which gets much more page time, three identical young boys are raised by three "mothers," in a home in extremely weird circumstances. They rarely see the outside world, they're often sick and take medicine, their dreams are meticulously recorded by the "mothers," and all their schooling comes from a set of weird encyclopedias that supposedly contain all the knowledge in the world, which are also the only books they have access to. There used to be 40 boys, but when they recover from their mysterious illness, they get to go to Margate, a wonderful vacationland, forever.

I'm sure you can figure out the general outline of what's going on with the boys, at least, just from this. What's up with the girl doesn't become clear for a while.

Spoilers through about the 40% mark )

Spoilers for the entire book )

This book was critically acclaimed - it was a Kirkus best book of 2025 - but I thought it had major flaws, which unfortunately I can only describe by spoiling the entire book. It's not at all an original idea, and I do think we're supposed to be ahead of the characters, but maybe not that much ahead. It also contained a trope which I hate very much and its thesis contradicted itself, but how, again, is under the end cut. It's a very serious book about very serious real life stuff, but that part really didn't work for me because of spoilers.

Lots of people loved it though. It would probably make an interesting paired reading with a certain very acclaimed spoilery book (Read more... )), which I have not read as I have been spoiled for the entire story and it doesn't really sound like something I'd enjoy no matter how great it is. But I suspect that it's the better version of this book.

Trauma/Critical Care/Acute Care Surgeon Work Conditions & Day-to-Day

Hello! I have three questions, all about the work of trauma/critical care/acute care surgeons in the US:

1) Would it ever be feasible for a TACS attending at an academic Level I trauma center to take semi-regular lunch breaks when on day shift (obviously assuming there’s no major trauma needing resuscitation and/or immediate operation, and assuming they have adequate support from residents, etc.)? What if it was decreed necessary by their doctor or their psychologist?

Narratively the goal here is to get the character outdoors near the hospital at a regular-ish time for ~30 minutes at least a few days a week, on at least some weeks. Judging from what I’ve read from people in this specialty on reddit it sounds as though this might (???) be achievable at some hospitals, especially if their setup happens to be rotating weeks of ICU / non-ICU trauma / EGS / admin-and-research, but given the apparent prevalence of hospital workers in acute care specialties not getting any breaks whatsoever I really can’t tell.

2) At what point is the TACS attending no longer involved in a patient’s care if the patient ends up requiring a long-term (at least several months) hospital stay to recover? Would it be as soon as the patient is stable enough to be out of the ICU? My understanding is that since trauma surgeons are largely doing non-surgical critical care and may often be in charge of the ICU they might be managing an operative trauma patient for a while post-op, but I’m not clear on at what point that patient stops being their problem.

3) To whom would a TACS attending (again, at an academic Level I) report to within the hospital hierarchy? Would it be the chief of the trauma service(?) (And would that person be the same or different from whoever they would need to clear FMLA leave or vacation time with?)

Any information or corrections on any of this greatly appreciated! Thank you!

2026 Prediction Meme

New Year Book Meme, via [personal profile] calliopes_pen:

1. Grab the nearest book.
2. Turn to page 126
3. The 6th full sentence is your life in 2026.

I'm quoting the sentence in context, just for additional fun:
Schließlich sagte Fidelma in ruhigem und vernünftigem Ton: "Ich bin wieder in Ordnung, Grian. Du kannst mich loslassen."

Definitely happy to take that for 2026!

(The book is Peter Tremayne's Tod auf dem Pilgerschiff - the German translation of Act of Mercy, one of the Sister Fidelma mysteries. I happen to also have the English version in ebook form - there, the paragraph in question reads, "Finally Fidelma said in a quiet and reasonable tone: ‘I am all right now, Grian. You may let go.’")

Picspam/Quiz: Hands - answers

And here are the answers to the hands quiz!

There were some very excellent guesses, and almost all characters and scenes were guessed in some fashion. The only one where no one came close to guessing the scene was 8d, which is a not very recognisable flashback. I'm totally impressed with everything else, though! Congrats! :D

44 answers behind the cut )

And that's it! Thank you all for playing, and/or enjoying the picspam! ♥

[Harry Potter] Six sentences because it's sunday and I have laundry I should be sorting right now

Six sentences for sunday!

This is the male!Hermione Granger/Neville Longbottom one, during sixth year.

"Maybe I don't need to pass all my NEWTs," Leontes says in the middle of exam week, their alcove of the common room all too studious around him. "Taking them is good enough, isn't it?"

Neville and Seamus hit him with every forcible mind-clarifying spell they can think of, while Dean grabs one of the Creeveys and urgently demands his camera.

"Maybe it's too much to think I can--"

Dean gets an amazing shot of Neville throwing himself at Leontes while Seamus tries a binding spell that he swears gets rid of most mind-altering curses.

"I don't think he's been confunded," Seamus says.
