I think that people who for neuroatypicality reasons didn't see themselves reflected elsewhere could see themselves in hard SF etc, and I guess this also applied to other types of ... outsider-ness? Especially with the AIs. They often tended to have a lot about not fitting in/being expected to be something one isn't going on under the surface.
