extrapenguin: Rey deflecting lighting with a lightsaber (sw rey)

I did, in fact, make a premiere for [community profile] vidukon_cardiff! Despite moving internationally. (I have, alas, been kind of busy after it as well, and my commute is horrible by my standards now, but I'll make a post about my experience ... later this month!) Here's the vid:

I also spoke on the Premieres Timeline Show & Tell panel, hosted by [personal profile] marah_sarie! I revealed that, due to this whole "moving internationally" thing, I had not had the time to make a vid, and a week before the deadline, I was feeling a bit :( about it. I went through the short songs in my music library but wasn't feeling very inspired, so on the Sunday, I decided to give up and instead add song length information to my giant music spreadsheet. Then, when I got to B, I came across a song where I'd already had a concept for a Rey vid back in 2023 (back when all I knew of the OT and ST was through osmosis, lol) and, as I already had all the clips, I decided I'd be doing that. I've lost the planning post-it, but on Tuesday evening, I wrote down something roughly like this:

intro - Order 66
verse 1 - Rey alone on Jakku
bridge 1 - Rey in the outpost on Jakku
chorus 1 - Finn can't train her
verse 2 - Luke won't train her
bridge 2 - temptation of Kylo
chorus 2 - Kylo won't train her
instrumental - Leia dies on her
chorus 3 - Palpatine won'ẗ train her

Then I went to bed. I was busy Wednesday evening, so on Thursday, I added markers to the song for the start of all the above sections (+ the moment when the instrumental changes tone), added folders into the kdenlive clip file (labeled 0, 1A, 1B, 1C, 2A, 2B, 2C, 2D, and 3C), and possibly imported clips into the folders.

My kdenlive setup – basically just out of the box

Timeline with markers

My next free time was on Saturday afternoon. I spent the rest of Saturday actually vidding, and did a test render pretty early on (when I had ~1 min or less) ... only to discover that kdenlive had not rendered in the audio track or half the clips. As it worked in the preview window and I did not so much have deadline panick as deadline zen, I shrugged and did some more vidding. I think I managed to do basically all of it on Saturday, and then on Sunday I went over the timing, did the color correction (alas, the Sequels had sludge poured over them in post), and rendered a file that had all the clips and also the audio! ...only to realize I hadn't signed up to the con yet, so I did that in a hurry. Didn't even try a themed premiere, since what even would be a Gratuitious Picture of Myself in vid form?

My attempts at making it possible to actually perceive what is happening on screen

So I made a perfectly funtional vid in less than 12 hours of editing. The only way this was possible was a pre-existing clip library.

Clipping story! Back in early 2023, I got the idea for Reincarnation (Rey is Anakin reincarnated) – note that at that point, I had not watched the OT or ST yet – and decided I would need to try this clipping thing. I thus clipped my way through the nine main SW movies, first the prequels, then the OT and ST as I watched them. At first, I was applying the scissors whenever there was an internal cut, and labeling the files with who was present. However, this really sucked, so after finishing the pod race ("TPM Shmi QGJ PA JJB race 13 victory.mkv" etc) I skipped ahead to the reactor palace fight, clipped that, and then skipped to AotC. From there, I realized I mentally categorized clips based on where they happened, so when I clipped the Anakin stuff + some bits I thought I might need, I put the locale first ("AotC Nvilla Anakin nightmare.mkv") and continued this through RotS (Padmé's apartment was, of course, "apartme" and Palpatine's office "Poffice") and the OT (clipping Leia and Vader).

Then, by RotJ, I was segmenting the climactic fight into three ("RotJ throom2 Palps swivel throne.mkv", "RotJ thduel 24 DV delimbed.mkv", "RotJ thend 22 Palps ling DV yeet.mkv") and, once I was done with that, I realized I had been a bit dumb: I recalled things based on where they were, yes, but also primarily chronologically. Also these tiny little snippets were annoying to go through.

And thus I set out to clip TFA scene by scene, chronologically, from "TFA 001 space.mkv" to "TFA 104 Rey LS.mkv" (via e.g. "TFA 058 Rey escape stroop.mkv"). I planned to do the rest of the ST the same way, but then I watched TLJ and oh my god the Canto Bight subplot, I hates it. A blight upon it. (Also I wanted to get the clipping done and get to vidding Reincarnation.) So I just clipped all the Rey bits ("TLJ Rey 083 LS fight ls.mkv") and the Leia bits ("TLJ Leia devacuum.mkv"), plus misc cool/visually impressive/possibly necessary bits ("TROS Vader 003 untouch.mkv") and continued that way through TRoS, since I only really care about them. (I might go through and clip the Finn bits, too, as I did kind of get an idea for a Finn focus vid...) I did relapse a bit to the excessive scissors disease trying to eliminate Kylo's presence from my clips to a level that, ah, isn't necessarily the best, and did make my Kylo section of Is There Anybody Out There slightly more annoying to make.

So uh half the reason I make so many Rey vids is because I have the clips ready (and also I love her). I should probably clip the rest of the movies (PT and OT especially) to TFA standards at some point.

In retrospect, there are a few places where I would like to adjust the timing or add an extra clip to make the tempo of the edits better match the tempo of the music, but, well. I did accidentally play myself into making a vid album (Beyond the Black, self-titled album) so this can be the single version and the album version can be a bit tweaked.

(Also, the album includes a Game of Thrones fansong. halp wtf am I supposed to do with that)
