(The basic concept is that for each Writing Rainbow round, one has to write a fic where the round's color is included in the title.) Purple Wisps of Greyish Mist (T, Guardian) Instead of quitting, Li Qian takes a month's break and returns to Professor Shen's care. She's glad she's there, as Professor Shen has started to be more and more stressed with all the duties piled on him. And that greyish smoke occasionally poking at him can't be a good omen, either.

Once, there was a story, written in green (T, Guardian) ...and the story was based on the truth as its teller knew her. And as each story is told to an audience, the audience can discover the discrepancies in the truths presented.
My Mother is a Goose, Honking in the Green (T, Guardian) Zhao Yunlan is accosted by the villainous trio. Proceedings are interrupted by a goose falling from the skies, the plot is derailed with honking, and Zhao Yunlan discovers a deep-seated loathing of goose poop.

Yellow Carp's Maw (T, Nan Chan) Jing Lin dares Cang Ji to eat him.
A Smile (Warm Like the Yellow Sun) (T, Sect Leader/Shimei) After their reunion in the Shuzhou town, Xiao Rufeng brings Ye Xiaoqi to the demonic sect's compound. Alas, on the way, Ye Xiaoqi ends up falling into a lake. What is Xiao Rufeng to do but remove all her clothes?

Reads
Children of Ruin, by Adrian Tchaikovsky
A sequel to Children of Time. Thematically similar in very many respects, though I think I liked the spiders more than the octopodes. The critters of Nod were intriguing, and one of them especially felt like it belonged in an Alastair Reynolds novel. The ending was both more heartwarming and less apt than that of Children of Time. The epilogue, OTOH, was much too far in the future to feel ... good, IMO. I think this is it for the series – the epilogue sort of removed space from sequels – but I'm definitely requesting this for Yuletide, and perhaps next WBEX, if I have time to participate.

Watches
I watched 13 episodes of The Untamed and quit. I'd read the original novel and had some issues and id mismatches with it, so the fact that the series changed things was a bonus. I did enjoy a bunch of the changes – Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji being actual friends in the past, the new yin iron plot – but ( I did not like it at all ) I think I might've been able to persevere had I not known via the novel what was coming, but ... no. I have much better things to do with my time. (I also can't shake off the residual bitterness that I was in the fandom back in 2018, but no-one cared back then, and everyone's only coming in when I've left.)

I'm currently 6 episodes into Motherland: Fort Salem. It has canon F/F, and the premise is that the military consists exclusively/mainly of witches, who are all women, so I get lots of women in uniform! Like all US TV, it's mumblecore and the color grading equivalent of mumblecore, which makes me really grateful for the dubbing, subs, and lack of hatred for the color green found in cdramas. It's 10 episodes long, 9 of which are out. The plot and worldbuilding are intriguing, and there is copious eye candy (oh hi Alder, oh hi Scylla, oh hi Abigail's cousin), even if I wish the actresses had bulked up a bit. My biggest complaint is the fact that there is het there. (Turns out my greatest desires include lack of het?)

To watch: I've heard good things about 沙海/Tomb of the Sea (note: eng title is a mistranslation) the TV series that's a prequel to a drama Zhu Yilong will be starring in. I might watch that if I can find it.

Rewatches
I've been rewatching Guardian with

glymr et al! It's more of a discussion thing, but here's some things people brought up:
- When Zhao Yunlan in ep 2 tells Shen Wei he thinks they've met before, he doesn't actually think so, he's just fishing for information from Shen Wei, because Shen Wei's reaction to meeting him was so strong.
- Shen Wei seems to have completely shut down Zhu Hong's hypnotism – after the hypnotism attempt in the mountains, she doesn't use it on anyone, though she does tear a leaf from Ye Zun's book and use her powers to rip the life straight out of Mi Lu later on.
I've also introduced more people to the concepts of Shen Wei's catch and release program, prize cabbages, and the very important canon moment of episode 2, where Guo Changcheng hugs kitty Da Qing.

Okay so I'm falling asleep on my keyboard (and will go goodnight soon), but:
- I have Worldcon flights! I'm arriving on the Monday afternoon (after 30+ hours of travel) so I'll have Mon afternoon/evening to wander around Wellington being supremely jetlagged, then Tuesday to wander around Wellington/maybe walk a path, slightly less jetlagged, before Worldcon on Wednesday-Sunday. I leave the following Saturday (with another 30+ hours of travel), so I have four and a half days (I'm reserving Friday evening for packing) to spend in and around Wellington. I've spent some time on the tourism webpages, but people in and around Wellington, is there anything you think I Must Do? (My current plans are mostly along the "walk around trails in the nature" lines. I'm physically fit and your winter is roughly our autumn, temperature-wise.)

- Work is ... not exploding, but busy. I'll have to go in early tomorrow to get some actual work done before some bullshit meetings. The good news is that I finally found out when I'm going on a longish work trip, and it's not in conflict with any

space_swap deadlines.

- I've continued with the femslash ficlets, even if I've wanted to write some Yang Jian/Xiaoxiao het for Fairyland Lovers (??????), return to a name magic MDZS concept I had in 2018, and do approximately eleventy billion other fics. Today's and yesterdays were CQL Wen Qing/Jiang Yanli darkfic.

- I came across some interesting meta on the translations of the MDZS sex scenes. Part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4, addendum from a translator (all on tumblr). It's interesting, and I'm side-eyeing ExR a bit now. (Tldr is that compared to two other translations, ExR picked the more "severe"/dubconny/yaoi-tropey ways to translate phrases and expressions, while the other two translations being compared are much closer to each other.) The meta author doesn't compare to the raws, but did (for parts 2 and 3) consult with someone who's looked at them.

- MDZS fic rec! But suppose Icarus did not fly so high, Jin Guangyao redemption/canon divergence where Nie Mingjue never dies. I enjoyed it!

- 音阙诗听 - 惊蛰 (Jingzhe | insects wake). It's not yet the 6th of March, and the insects are thankfully still asleep here, but I enjoy the song.

- it's remarkably chill, posting without the expectation of any feedback! Someone might click on the thing, or might not; I have achieved my brain chemicals simply from the accomplishment that is posting.

I've written other things as well! Okay, ch11 of For No Cradle Lasts Forever was mostly written already last year, but I did do my edits and elaborate upon some scenes in February. And Clouds Wept (Cloudswept) (T, Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan) was written wholly in February for

brush_and_lantern's Mix-Up theme.

And I discovered that

oriiwu drew fanart of one of my fics! Mo Xuanyu/Xue Yang, from Despite the Warning Signs. I absolutely love Xue Yang in his Jin sect robes!

Yours truly participated in a MDZS/Untamed zine project, and now it's public! Seasons Zine download link. Fics are 500 to 2k long, art is 1 or 2 pages, and there are 5 of each per season! I had lots of fun with the project, the mods were clear and communicative, and all in all I'd do it again in a heartbeat. I hope all of you MDZS/Untamed people take a peek and find something nice. (Continuity-wise, all were allowed. My personal contribution is novel-based but tbh I'm pretty sure it's canon-compliant for the adaptations as well. Some people wrote based on the donghua or the drama only, too.)

~~Today's~~ challenge is reccing fanworks! It's time to share stuff! Let's start with four recs for Guardian (TV) stories:
Back to the Middle (series) by

china_shop. This is a series of wonderful time travel fixit fics, and it engages with the concept of time travel in character-typical ways. (Each installment has a different POV character.) The standouts to me are Lin Jing's and Ye Zun's installments, though all of them are excellent takes.

The Dixing-Haixing Cultural Exchange Program (series) by

draconicsockpuppet. This is a cool Space Opera AU of Guardian, with nice kabooms, a fast-paced action plot, and very hot porn. (See installment #3.)

Flesh from Bone, Soul from Flesh by

ratbones. This is an amazing canonverse casefic that went appropriately dark and visceral.

Unrealistic Expectations by Anonymous. This is hot porn with excellent characterization.

One reference:
Liang primer by

ofsevenseas. This is a primer for stuff relevant to the setting of Nirvana in Fire, but some parts will no doubt be useful to anyone else writing fic for things set in ancient China.

Mooselk. This is an excellent character study of Yu Ziyuan as she is in the book. (IDK how it'll land on people who are drama- or donghua-based; both of them seem to have made her meaner.)

Then there's some scenes I actually have some direction for, though I probably need to brainstorm the order and way the separate arcs intertwine. Have a snippet, anyway:

(I am hiding quite a bit of stuff from the fic. There are several things I want y'all to be surprised by, and one of them happens pretty early on. This makes picking snippets awkward.)

Some day I'll have to edit spaceship rental (which might be called Waiting in the Sky?) and I'll add in more Da Qing and Zhao Xinci for thematic reasons. And an impassioned speech on mutualism in there somewhere.

mdzsseasonszine! I applied for winter, which was apparently the most coveted one for writers, and got in nevertheless! \o/ I have already written my zine submission. In fact, I have written three things that fit the requirements and need to pick which one to submit. /o\

I have finished editing and posting this! FREEDOM! (That I shall use ~~wisely~~ to write and post Guardian porn. And longfic, hopefully.) The journey closes with 56 subscribers and 32 bookmarks, of which 23 are public.

People have several types of name: the míng (presented first, if known), the zì (courtesy name; disyllabic, in brackets after the míng if that is known), and the hào (title/pseudonym/art name/etc), which is 3 to 4 syllables long. This is mostly for entertainment value plus reference to self; my Chinese is far from good enough to be of use beyond using the dictionary like a pro.

I was whining about it not getting comments earlier. Turns out I needed to post chapter 2 to get the ball rolling, and now I have a few loyal commenters who have much to say!

Of course, then I was cursed with another MDZS plotbunny. It would be harem, Wei Wuxian/everyone, be titled Proud Immortal Cultivator Wei, and the opening paragraph...

In his second webnovel, Airplane Shooting Towards the Sky treads much the same ground as in the first one, though his vocabulary has increased, the happenings are more naturalistic, and there is actually a framing device that explains why everyone wants to be in the protagonist's harem. The protagonist also differs from Luo Binghe in nature – Wei Wuxian does not set out to increase his harem, and enjoys playing house with them. In general, I rate this 5/10 due to the lack of focus on the actual cultivation and cultivational items.

Easter Monday counts as a Sunday, right? *g* I'm finally picking my way through the Space Swap collection that revealed (I know, bad mod), and I have some writing updates to share. I do not quite have six fics to share updates from, but ideas count as things, right?

1. That WIP? Now 41.9k according to gedit! AO3's wordcount is slightly lower than gedit's, always, but as I will have to fill in the sections that have [finish scene], it'll definitely be over 40k. It's the longest thing I've written, and it's novel-length! Woohoo! Posting will hopefully start during the first week of May.

"The art of cultivation requires a mind open to the world. How can your mind be open if you close your eyes to duty and fill your heart with hubris?" Wei Wuxian asked. "Now, let us sweep the training field. Hurry up and take a broom!"

2. My 520 Day Reverse Exchange Fic has quadrupled in wordcount! \o/ It is over the minimum already. Now I can just sail at the plot points I've planned. In an emergency, such as the plot growing into a 40k monster I cannot finish in time, the first scene sort of stands alone. (There's also another flexion point that could be rewritten into an ending a few scenes further in.) I really want to write the rest of the fic, though, and since this is now my biggest writing priority, it should be doable.

I chose to start with a WIP I intend to continue, so here's a snippet from my currently only WIP, which should hopefully be nonspoilery. (I'm trying to be able to post it onto AO3 blind so that people will be able to watch plot twists, including romantic ones, and not already know what'll happen.) The first ~500 words are available here. If you can magically suggest a title for this, please do; I'm all ears.

While Wen Ning cleaned himself, Wei Wuxian shook his traveling cloak and hung his Jiang sect robes to air. He heard Wen Ning climb out and dress himself. "You can wash your clothes now, Young Master Wei."

Wen Ning had turned away demurely again. Wei Wuxian sighed and lightly scrubbed his underwear and inner robes. He'd rather wear them to bed, though, and there was no clothesline to hang them from, so he'd have to use spiritual energy to dry them – and hopefully not set them on fire. He eyed the clothes and the tub. "Hey, have you ever dried clothes with spiritual energy? How much energy did it take?"

"I can dry them for you!" Wen Ning said. "I've d-done it many t-times!"

"Please, do!" Wei Wuxian said and threw the wet clothes at Wen Ning. They hit him square in the back of the head; he fell forwards. "Sorry, that was unintentional!"

Today went decently, despite me not getting enough sleep and my workplace door changing the locks for my office from a key to access card access and only updating the access codes at like 9:30! (I did labwork.) Fandom, I love you. ♥

1. Guardian Episode by Episode: 04 is up, and already has some comments! Watching this one, I noted that episodes 2 and 4 both end at natural stopping points, and I remembered that at least Nirvana in Fire got broadcasted at a rate of two episodes a night, so maybe Guardian is the same, which would explain the pacing? I'll keep this in mind while continuing the rewatch.

2. My fic inspired a Guardian kink poll! \o/ I am thrilled to be such a font of inspiration.

3. There will be a Guardian reverse exchange (you shortlist 3 offers, one of whom is matched to you, instead of leaving it to AO3's RNG) coming up soon! All swords were given names, of course, and that was the only engraving on the metal. In addition to that, however, would appear what was called the "ghost script" – a second set of characters on the reverse.

The ghost script could be the name of a sword, another weapon, or perhaps a person. Whatever the characters referred to, they would lead to Song Lan's soulmate.

Event ad on Twitter. I originally only planned on participating on the final day – I have an idea already! – but I went fuck it and decided I'll write some ficlets. It's only three days, I can write three ficlets in a row. Even if tomorrow's prompts are a bit orthogonal to antithetical to my interests, I can surely write some happy family-related stuff. (There will be zero farewells/sad things and absolutely no modern AUs on my watch.)

space_swap nominations are ongoing! They'll end on the 3rd of Feb. I have nommed four fandoms myself, and am steadily approving others' noms. Next batch will be tomorrow, I think.

I subbed another fanvid a few days back! 闲云志 Record of Idle Clouds; again Song Lan/Xiao Xingchen. Less depressing than most. I've also now read up to ch 108 of a translation, and I have to say, I was spoiled for all/most of the relationship beats, but somehow the execution and context makes them infinitely worse and less convincing romance beats. Bleh. I'll continue my ways of not shipping Lan Wangji/Wei Wuxian.
