extrapenguin: Rey deflecting lighting with a lightsaber (sw rey)
Oh look I'm actually poking at my new year's resolutions. I took Return to the Sea and ripped out the first verse and put something more thematic in there. Now I have a Rey/Leia vid! I'm using it for the [community profile] vid_bingo vidder's choice on my card.

Major Character Death. The AO3 summary is Kill my son and die with me.

Will you take this dagger from me, sweet sister?
Don't linger
Come on into the water 'cause our blood runs deeper
and I miss you

This is my magnum opus. The entire reason I watched the OT and ST. On the 28th of February, I told a friend over Discord "RIP to me, I have a vid idea that I super want to do and that necessitates watching the OT and ST (and clipping through all 9 movies)" after hearing the song for the first time and then, uh, went and did it. I originally planned to submit it to VidUKon, but I wasn't even done with the clipping, so I swapped to the idea I got a few days later watching ANH: Burn It Down. I finally finished the draft in August and asked on the Vidders Discord for someone to make sure the concept was clear. [personal profile] seekingferret answered the call, and then we ended up having a truly comedic stint of taking turns being AFK for weeks on end, but I did end up with invaluable feedback on how I needed to toss out my instrumental intro and make a new one.

General notes on how I made it: I first did the purely-ST Rey "frame", starting from ~0:31, vidding along as I clipped. This led to one false start, where I originally used TLJ and Rey holding Kylo's red saber, for the section from 2:26, but then I realized I had nowhere to go to for the instrumental from 2:50, and ripped that out and replaced it with TRoS footage after I'd clipped that. Then I watched through all the lightsaber fights I'd included, made notes on what Rey's lightsaber was doing/directions of slashes etc, and went through my clip library to see what clips would best match. Matching the TRoS Rey-Kylo fight footage with OT Vader-Luke footage was a bit hard, since I was working against lightsaber color coding and also the OT fights were Of Their Time. Grabbing PT Anakin clips to match with the TFA fight in the snow, OTOH, was pretty easy ... apart from the bit where the PT's fights are faster-paced than the ST's. But I really like how the bit from 1:30 goes, with the intercuts to the Anakin-Dooku fight, as well as the 3:09 to 3:46 flashback section, especially the final "Reincarnation – My soul won't die" from 3:43 to 3:46.

Also, because I knew this was Fast Cuts: The Vid, I watched my final draft at half speed in VLC to make sure everything was timed and to really have time to consider every image I presented in the montage. I think this is a good process step and will repeat it for any future vids with lots of rapid cuts/a plethora of visuals.

So [community profile] vidukon_cardiff is done and I can show the three (!) premieres I made for the con. (I also submitted Begin Again to the Vidder's Choice non-premieres show.)

To fully appreciate the magnitude of this undertaking, please note that the deadline for getting them all in was the same as the deadline of [community profile] highadrenalineexchange, so I spent the last two weeks of the time writing a 10k fic.

General notes: I learned how to do time remapping, I made my first vid based on pre-clipped stuff vs clipping in kdenlive, and I continued my micro-rendering ways (rendering small segments that I'd vidded to see how it looked like outside the editor). I also continued making title cards for my vids! I think it's a definite improvement in technique.

Vexercises round-up post

The 2022 round of [community profile] vexercises – an annual intro to vidding bash that also attracts a bunch of more experienced people looking to try out something new, either in source, software, or technique – just came to a close! I completed each of the 7 rounds, and figured out I might as well make a final post on the matter, explaining my stuff!

tl;dr and many, many embedded videos )

Vids I put on AO3:
Open up the Gates | High and Low (SWTOR)
Leave This Place Alive (SWTOR)
Die Like a God (SWPT)
Common People (SWPT)

A snippet from the WIP of doom, which is now 6 chapters/30k words long, and will swell to twice that. When I go in and add the stuff I missed, I wouldn't be surprised to look at 80k of fic followed by 3 sequels. The title in progress for this one is All That is Solid Melts into Air; All That is Holy is Profaned.

Despite her confidence and determination back in the audience room, she still had some doubts. She'd been about to decide to return to the Jedi – return home – before Mandalore, but it had been a fragile thing, easy to crush with doubts or disillusionment. Then the Republic had fallen and the Jedi Order with it, and she was the prodigal child never given the chance to come home before it burned to ashes.

She'd wanted to come. Oh, she'd wanted to come, she could now admit to herself. And now she couldn't.

And even if she could … who would knight her with her master gone? Anakin was dead. So was Master Plo. She couldn't sense Master Obi-Wan. Who was left, from whose blade knighthood would have any meaning?

Help me, Master, she thought, and reached out into the Force.

Anakin's ghost snapped to her, surprised. He felt like concern and urgency, wrapped around Ahsoka like a safety blanket. What ails you now, O padawan mine? Ahsoka could imagine him saying.

She could not speak words into the Force, but she could push all her feelings, the entire complicated tangle of them, at him. She wanted his advice, wanted him alive, and accidentally unleashed her cruelest, most selfish desire: to have her master by her side.

I have realized Padmé Amidala makes perfect sense: she gave a fascist absolute power and only married a dude once he revealed he'd massacred a village, both of which are 100% in keeping with the fact that she lives in a castle and is filthy rich. Like, "never wears the same clothes twice" rich. If you look at members of her socioeconomic class on Earth, her actions fit right in!

This is a shitpost. You have been warned.

Codywan: While I'm meh about the ship, the smushname has a nice cadence.

Rexsoka: Kind of blunt, but they don't really have a better option.

Obitine: I am always very sad that the -tine comes from Satine Kryze rather than Sheev Palpatine, but I accept that the shippers didn't have a better option. Even I will admit Sati-Wan doesn't have a ring to it.

Quiobi: This one's just boring. May I suggest swapping to Obijinn instead?

Anidala: The shippers are cowards who refuse to accept that their ship's true smushname is Animé.

Obidala: The smushname is like the cheap knockoff of the above, with inferior flow, and even the true alternative of Obimé doesn't exactly roll off the tongue.

Obikin: Somehow, the shippers have settled on the absolute worst smushname they could have created. Every time I see Obikin I have a moment of dread as I think this is about fictionkin and the person speaking believes they are Obi-Wan Kenobi on the astral plane. Relics of the past (pre-2006) have informed me that this ship used to be known as Aniobi, which is much less objectionable. Perhaps we stand at the ruins of a top/bottom shipwar. In any case, no-one seems to have used the most superior of variants: Ani-Wan.

An enjoyable romp, though I still have zero idea how movies generate fandoms. Below, my first thoughts after seeing the film, unspoiled:

Good: apparently people of Asian descent exist in space!
Bad: apparently women don’t.

My personal thoughts on casting: Bodhi the pilot should’ve been a woman or at least looked significantly different from Cassian Andor, since I couldn’t tell them apart at all. Chiruit Îmwe was a character concept which was interesting, though I’d have liked for his companion-protector to be a woman, too. K-numbers was annoying, and very obviously Token Comic Relief.

A nice waste of time, like the best movies are. The Imperial uniforms were nice to look at, especially Krennic's white cape uniform. Zero shippy feels.
