Today's saldo is several half-finished projects:

1. I have finished the translations for 闲云志 (MDZS fansong), but not the subtitle file with the timings
2. I have added words to the Yuletide project
3. I have made two Guardian icons:
   
4. I asked the Guardian comm who Zhu Yilong's body double was, but so far no answer

...so I shall compensate with a link: A Brief History of Same-Sex Relationships in China. For those in need of more thoughts on China, Prof. David K. Jordan has a webpage with lots of intriguing information. Every time I visit, I find something new to read, and it's all fascinating. Today's click was on family structure, which people writing fic set in the past would find useful. Example paragraph:

It has been convincingly argued that the common budget is one of the most important defining characteristics of Chinese families. One effect of this custom is to define who is in or out of a family by means other than kinship. Kinship makes one a potential member of a family. But close kinsmen can be in different families if the family has decided to stop sharing a budget.

It also covers family planning, modes of marriage (daughter-in-law adoption, uxorilocal marriage), adoption, and kinship and changes to kinship in general. Well worth the read, as are a lot of the pages on the site.

Oh wow, that's a great link! I got about half-way through the history of same-sex relationships before I had to stop myself. I need to be writing right now! Not go and read, no matter how fascinating the information ...

Background is always interesting! I think researching the setting enough to get a broad overview of what would be considered normative is a prerequisite of writing stuff that doesn't ring hollow, and then of course there's my kink for doing the research, which leads to multi-paragraph descriptions of gimbals and how to make them... and a very satisfied, albeit readership! I do support getting out of deadline hell first, though.

It's based on research done in the 60s and 70s, at least partially, so there's likely a generational gap to you as well. I do agree that bird's eye views are very interesting!
