Guardian playlist: Beat of a Yearning Heart

Once upon a time, there was a post on songs that make one think of Guardian; yours truly replied with a list of songs. Here's some of them, presented in order to sort of make a coherent Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan narrative. Mostly stuff that falls under the umbrella of rock or metal, for that's what my musical tastes run towards. Have fun listening!

It also made me realize I don't yet have a good shippy icon for these two, or even a good general-purpose icon for either of them solo! Grumble.

I love the two by Indica in particular. Playlists are fun because they introduce me to artists I would never have stumbled across otherwise.

I'm glad you liked them! I was a bit iffy about including Finnish-language music at first, but since they're available subtitled on YouTube, and they sound exactly like how I imagine Shen Wei sounds, I kept them.

There are some other songs I associate with characters, and now that a few of my favorite bands have put out new material in the past few years, I might put together a Ye Zun mini-fanmix, but have a sneak preview:

I LOVE predominantly metal/rock playlists, thank you so much for this! I've been meaning to listen to more Amaranthe, I like what I've heard of them so far.

I really enjoy non-English music/lyrics because I can listen to them when I'm working and not be distracted. That's how I got into K-Pop, in fact--I needed something upbeat but with lyrics I couldn't understand to listen to while writing my dissertation.

I know one (1) song by Evanescence, but it fit amazingly, so by golly it'd go there. Right at the start. So everyone would know to adjust their expectations accordingly. *g* (In my defense, I did use the re-release instead of the classic version.)

Yay! In looking up song lyrics for this, I discovered Amaranthe had a new album out in 2018, which I didn't hear about! The one prior to that was a bit too pop-y for me, but perhaps they've recovered their stride. You might also be interested in checking out the misc extra songs I gave upthread.

Ooh, same! This is one of the reasons I like Chinese music (though as I'm using it for language practice as well, soon I'll have to switch to pure instrumentals *g*), even if most of it is a snoozefest.

If you like upbeat music, other Finnish artists to check out might be Kaija Koo (ex: Tinakenkätyttö, Vapaa) and Maija Vilkkumaa (ex: Satumaa-tango, Lottovoitto).

BB Weiwei is very aww-worthy! He definitely deserves a hug and a Kunlun.

I've mostly only encountered them via vids and fansongs, but offhand I like 天地缓缓 by 伦桑 (here used as background music to fanart of MDZS), 五音Jw, and sodagreen's 我好想你.

Since you ask... ^_^ (I've basically been in fandom only on my phone on the sly this week, so I always meant to get back to this post and check the songs I hadn't managed to check before.)

I'm definitely liking the overall "dramatic, sometimes emo rock" style of this playlist. Which is in line with me thinking from the start that Evanescence is a totally great choice for these guys. >_>

Interestingly, the version of Bring Me To Life (which I hadn't known before - I'm old, I own the original album) works for me, but it pushes the song much more firmly into Shen Wei territory for me. The lyrics are pretty Shen Wei to start with, but the rock style of the original makes me think more of Zhao Yunlan, so it feels a bit more... couple-y to me, while the more operatic, less rocky version is more decidedly Shen Wei to me.

I really liked the Finnish songs you put on there. I'll have a poke around for mp3s - those could definitely be songs I'd enjoy listening to even if I don't understand Finnish!

Straight to the Heart cracked me up for the 80s style HARDCOREness, but I can totally see this for Zhao Yunlan. Woobilicious hardcoreness is kind of his thing.

I know Within Temptation's See Who I Am from a different, much older fandom, so it's doing that 'slightly belonging elsewhere' thing in my head, but I can totally see it. (It's also a song I really like.) ((And I'd never really gone looking for more of their stuff, weirdly, so the other two songs in this playlist were nice discoveries!))

Amaranthe - Call Out My Name is too shouty for me in the shouty bits. >.< In the melodic parts it WORKS and hits that nice drrrrramatic rock button, but I'm sensitive to shouting, so that probably won't end up on my phone.

Happoradio sounds lovely! I really want that on a playlist on my phone. With that one it was also especially rewarding to read the translation. Aww, Zhao Yunlan.

The last one wigs me out a little in much the same way that Rammstein wigs me out, though the lady's voice is nicer. *g*

LOL! The song was actually only released in 2017, but yes, very HARDCORE in a certain way. It's striking how much like early episodes Zhao Yunlan it feels like.

Here I was, thinking it was "Memories" that was the token Within Temptation song everyone put on their playlists! They've even recently released a new album, which I didn't have the time to listen to before putting together this playlist. At least one song will go onto a subsequent Ye Zun/arc of villainy playlist, should I get around to making one.

Yeah, Amaranthe is ... I like a lot of their songs, but they get a bit shouty and growly at times. The melodic parts really work, but.

Considering that Laibach is something Rammstein has cited as a major musical influence, I am not surprised! It is at the industrial end of my tastes, and I think I can sort of see how it wigs you out? (Also, alternative ending song: Amaranthe - Infinity; growly bits but no shouty bits.)

I like those bits - maybe at odds with how I don't like the growling/shouting in some of these other songs but the spoken lines in Bring Me to Life don't rise to the level of "shouting" for me.
