That explains the hit-or-miss nature! At least there's a possibility of more depth, that's always nice. I once was lucky enough to attend a lecture by Horst Störmer that was a general overview of his work, but then since the vast majority of the university's STEM faculty attended, the questions were amazing. They ended up going well past the scheduled time and I learned a lot. Usually it doesn't go so well, though...
