Last autumn, I watched the first two seasons of For All Mankind, an alternate history where the Soviets reach the Moon first and the space race continues on. It sort of comes across as a very US-centric fix-it for RL, given that one of the first things they do after the requisite astronaut angst of the Soviet victory is hire some female astronauts, so that by the end of s1, when there is an ongoing situation, the majority of the focal characters in space and on CAPCOM are women.

To absolutely no-one's surprise, I immediately fell in love with Molly Cobb, one of the astronauts. My next fave is Danielle Poole, once she got to actually do something other than be there next to the Molly vs Tracy drama and Ellen's love life.

Anyway. Then there's [community profile] festivids. I originally thought I'd never get anything done for that, no way, but then it turns out the Festivids reveals are in January, not December, so I went through the requests, confirmed people were requesting For All Mankind, and started thinking about the Molly or Danielle vids I could make based on s1-s2 footage and for which I had a potential song. In the end, I discovered that Northwest Passage, cover by Unleash the Archers, was a very good Molly song, if not based on lyrics, then based on vibes.

One of the things commenters brought up wrt the vid was that the choice of song highlighted the show's manifest destiny vibes; not being American, I'd never heard of it before, but yeah, I can recognize that strand of US-centrism, especially in s1. (S2 went more in an active Cold War in Space direction, with the Soviet Union being more than just boogeymen.)

I guess the show's main protagonist is Ed Baldwin? He is kind of a shitty person in a way the show is, I think, aware of, but OTOH he essentially immediately ended up liking the female astronaut candidates he was pulled into training, and made fast friends with Molly and Danielle when put on the same mission as them. I am very glad that the show didn't mine interpersonal sexism and racism for drama, even when they dealt with societal sexism (like a last-minute attempt to can the female astronaut program again) and racism (like Danielle asking to be made commander of a mission). It comes across a bit utopistic in this, esp. compared to the way it deals with homophobia, but eh, whatever.

In conclusion, the space bits are fine, I'm just not into the interpersonal drama. Hopefully s3 won't have anything as interminable as the Gordo-Tracy plot of s2.

Oh, and another thing from Festivids: Short Films Directed By 流云蕊 | Liu Yun Rui is a fandom tag I can use for Until Eternity.
