Featuring the worst birthday party in the history of birthday parties.
Jing shines – he shows initiative dealing with the exploded fireworks factory, he acts appropriately, and MCS engineers a situation to get Jing noticed! Maybe someday the Emperor'll make him an Imperial Prince. His mother, herbalist medic Concubine Jing is also surprisingly good at playing the political game, getting her son into Imperial favor enough that Jing won't be marrying the Princess of Chu.
The whole bit about not telling Jing that MCS = Lin Shu was like a direct hit to the id. "I must preserve Jingyan's heart" indeed. The identity porn's got some delicious angst and doing the bad things on another's behalf is very much to the interest of my loyalty kink. And then Meng figures out how to inform Jing that he supports Jing's coming emperorship, all without revealing his link to MCS. <3
Ah, it seems that the Marquis Ning is the target of MCS's revenge. The pre-plotting must have been immense – did MCS really cultivate Jingrui as a friend just because of Ning's fuckery? It's a bit ironic that the actual biofather of the boy with two fathers is neither of the men. The Grand Princess being pregnant does explain why she was so quickly forced into a marriage. The Marquis knew she was pregnant/the son was illegitimate, so he hired an assassin – but then left the boy alive, despite knowing the assassin had (potentially) failed? Was it just because the Emperor's decision was useful to him? Did the Grand Princess arrange for the kids to be switched?
Xia Dong continued trying to investigate the murdered eunuch case and invited herself to the birthday party just to do it; I like her! Mu Nihuang left to Yunnan, which, okay, she hasn't been doing that much interesting recently. Mostly I'm just annoyed she left in court clothes, rather than her cool set of armor. Qin Banruo is sharp enough, I wonder when she'll figure out that MCS is not advising Prince Yu.
Now I must feed myself, but I shall watch ep 21, Jingrui's Terrible Birthday pt 2, before looking at the comments.
