I way prefer to do things on paper, so I've been printing the PDFs from Learn Chinese Every Day. Currently have the first 50 out of 413. They don't start with the absolute most simplest characters, but still reasonably simple and decent. No English translation shown, but I'm planning to write the English definition next to the character. App-wise, Hanzi Writer might be what you're looking for, but searching the app store would probably be a better source.
