In honor of revisiting the Uplift universe to gather squeespiration about my favorite dolphin, my journal's subtitle is now # If you're great at leaping — bite the sun! # It's a poem quote from David Brin's Aficionado, anthologized into Existence but available free online, about the start of the dolphin uplift program.
I also found Startide Rising for free on Google Books! It's not a complete preview, but I collected all the Trinary haikus found therein:
* The stars shake with storms
* The waters below roll thunder–
* Still, are we wet, love? *
* Slow your travel–boy sled-rider *
* Exploring pod–does gather hither *
* Hikahi comes–we wait here for her *
* Flame-fluked I–Hikahi call you *
* Dorsal listening–ventral doing *
* Laugh at my words–but first obey them *
* Gather at the sled–and listen! *
* Ladder climber–Sharp-eyed rhymer *
* Call a fix–for seeking finders *
* Trill sonar–through the leaf blinders *
* Holding off–the sea-squid's beak*
* Suckers tight–and outlook bleak *
* Havoc done–on Ssassia wreaked!*
* They stand in my road,
The mad, ancient, nasty things
Tell them ‘move, or else!’ *
* Count the joys of movement?–
First among advantages:
Absence of Boredom– *
* Echoes of the shore
Are like drifting feathers
Dropped by pelicans! *
* To be noticed by–
A humpback
* To be credited
At last
For being me *
* Hands and fire?
Hands and fire!
* Use them, use them
To leap higher!
* Dreams and song?
Dreams and song!
* Use them, use them
To leap-long! *
Happy Yuletide, everyone. I'm already all in the mood because I got to think about Creideiki again. :D
