Guardian OST and not-OST
2 Feb 2019 21:29By request from
trobadora, a brief run-through of the 25 Guardian soundtrack files found via here. (Note that Amazon and iTunes only have the first 19, and the last 5 don't appear anywhere in the drama and are only fansongs which for some reason ended up over on doramamusic.) Also, someone already did this in Chinese.
(ETA: The OST is also available as a youtube playlist.)
(Flying Through Time)
The promo song, and also what appears in the background of the final wormhole scene! Smooth and soft. Can also be found subbed by OrangeBiscuit.
Chen Xueran - We Won't be Falling
The opening theme. The music is dramatic, and the lyrics might be a bit inane, but I've heard worse in both grammar and theme on the radio. The main thrust is that "the story will keep on going", and in general that despite the circumstances, we'll hold on and resist.
(Flying Through Time)
Exactly the same as #01, but sung by one person who is neither of the lead actors.
(Original Intent)
The inset song we first hear during the sonic powers girl case! Also subbed by OrangeBiscuit. "Let your 初心 follow you into hopeless situations" and so on, this continues the same theme as the opening and is also sort of a response to the ending. The title is interesting – OrangeBiscuit has lots to say:
(Soul of the Living)
The Dramatic Things Are Happening music! I quite like this, and it's also one of the "stickier" pieces of music in the drama. Mostly used when they're snatching victory from the jaws of defeat, IIRC.
(Confused Heart's Song)
And now we have another immediately recognizable one! It's the sadder one with the bell sounds and strings. I want to say it was used for (futile) waiting and maybe Shen Wei's heartfelt pining face.
(Power of Remembrance)
Di-da di-da di-di-duu! I associate this with the sonic powers girl case as well, for some reason. The start is used for "timelapse while driving car" at at least one point, but it's a sort of lightweight "dramatic things are happening" song at the end. "Things are coming to a head"?
(Kunlun)
This song is called "Kunlun", and it's the sad one with strings and piano! I think this is the one used for Sad Shen Wei pining after Kunlun?
(Shen Wei)
I think this is supposed to be Shen Wei's theme song? To me, it sort of sounds like someone remixed 08, or put 08 and 06 in a blender, despite logically not sounding like that. Oops. Somehow manages to be even sadder than either.
(Farewell Flame)
Another of the dramatic songs! Swells in immediately with drama and tension. Used for when the team is in actual danger that's deepening, IIRC.
(One Glance More)
While I am pretty sure this has been used somewhere, it's not as iconic as some of the above, and also kind of slow. Maybe it's mixed more into the very back of romantic moments?
(Reignite This One Heart)
I think this is a dramatic plans music? It brings to mind the Guardian Lantern and the earth splitting apart, though the latter is more music-only and less Guardian-related. Sort of grandiose, and things are obviously happening. There's a choir singing, but I'm not sure if it's possible to make out the lyrics.
(Silently Guard)
A warm and slow one! It has the feel of Shen Wei tucking Zhao Yunlan into bed and also timelapses. I think this is the one I associate with romantic moments.
14. 罗锟 Luo Kun - 归 (Return)
Starts slow, then gets more action-y, and resembles hidden depths. Feels like Zhao Yunlan, in a way. Morphs into one of the more recognizable/iconic soundtrack moments.
(Clouds Appear at Sunset)
Egads another one that resembles 08! I know, not really, but they are very similar in emotion.
(Guardian)
Things are happening! Dark in tone. A nice bit of heartbeat sound in the middle. Feels intrigue-y. I suppose it's supposed to be the main theme of the drama, and I do recall hearing it before. Interesting in that it has a climax in the middle, before settling back into tension-building and then another climax at the end.
(Ten Thousand Years Without Turning One's Back)
Another one of those very Guardian soundtrack songs that I can't place! The start does sound very much like 10k years. Then it goes to reprise the intrigue bells of 06. Not a timelapse song, but more of a "single moment of waiting" song, if that makes any sense.
(Contaminate the Soul?)
Action! Drama! Drums! Uses leitmotifs very common in Guardian. I can't pinpoint a moment when we hear this one, either, but maybe perhaps one of the later-in-show confrontations with Ya Qing and others in Ye Zun's faction? Some was used with Zhu Jiu, but that might just be commonality with one of the other dramatic songs.
(A Bit of Sincerity)
Calm and slow and romantic in places. Perhaps just a little wistful. Again, I can't seem to recall when we hear this, but it gives a definite "Shen Wei watching Zhao Yunlan" feeling. The last of the ones on iTunes/Amazon.
(Just Cared Too Much)
Not actually on iTunes or Amazon, despite being the closing song! Subbed by OrangeBiscuit. It's slow and minor key and very much love from afar. The lyrics are very interesting; it seems this is Shen Wei's Sad Pining: The Song. We see it several times as an inset song, mostly associated with romantic scenes – the first example is Wang Zheng and Sang Zan's love affair, and we see it later in an explicitly romantic, flowers-and-candles context with the same pair. The bit about already being used to crying alone is very sad, if one thinks of it as being baby Shen Wei. It is interesting, and some of it even sort of fits (a certain interpretation of) post-canon scenario.
21. D.Mao - 咫尺 (Very Close)
Based on the metatext of these lyrics ("original:黄仁善 - 哀 爱情") I am going to go out on a limb and suggest this is a fansong! The start is a very good cure for insomnia. I'm reasonably certain this is from novel Shen Wei's perspective, pining for the eternally reincarnating Kunlun.
(The Big Seal Without Face?)
I found this on 5sing labeled as a Ye Zun fansong. Very sad, very lethargic, and an original composition as opposed to a rewrite of the lyrics to another song.
(The Mountains and Rivers Unbroken)
Another fansong on 5sing, but this time about Shen Wei/Zhao Yunlan. Novel fansong, based on what I have osmosed about it and its worldbuilding. A lot of the imagery is very vivid: 魂魄黑如墨 心尖上仍余一抹红 "The soul as black as ink, yet on the heart is a smear of red", for instance, plus the mirroring of Shen Wei's 巍 and Zhao Yunlan's 澜 in 岌巍不可终 温润盛貌荒芜成空 翻澜不知柔 却能缠绵春夏秋冬 I quite like it, even if I'm not a novel fan.
24. HITA - 镇断魂 (Suppress and Break the Souls?)
This one's in Cantonese! This, too, is on 5sing. Again, it's a novel fansong with lots of reincarnation imagery and from Shen Wei's POV. Lots of reduplication of words (eg 恩恩怨怨), of which I'm not sure whether it's because of a stylistic technique or because it's expected in Chinese. Nice bits as well; 一次次落空 "Time and again, I fail" is very aptly placed.
25. HITA - 镇断魂 (Suppress and Break the Souls) (Inst.)
The above, except instrumental. Musically, stuff happens and it doesn't put me to sleep. It's definitely more soothing in the humming/bg-vocals-only version.
(ETA: The OST is also available as a youtube playlist.)

The title is interesting – OrangeBiscuit has lots to say:
初心 'Chu Xin' is a word I find rather difficult to translate. That's why I left the name of the song as is. This phrase literally means 'initial/original heart'. As 心 'heart' in Chinese can mean anything from heart, mind, personality, character, will, intention, aspiration etc., this phrase has been translated into various phrases, from 'original intention/aspiration', 'roots', 'founding mission' up to 'remaining true to oneself' and many others besides. So you might understand the difficulty I have in choosing a word that best fits the song. Especially since I wanted to make the lyrics sound more romantic by including the word 'heart' in them. 'Heart from the beginning' might work, but it is very long -.-'. 'Original aspiration' somewhat fits, but doesn't sound romantic at all...MDBG sez 初心 also translates to
(Buddhism) "beginner's mind" (i.e. having an attitude of openness when studying a subject just as a beginner in that subject would). The song in general reads like an exhortation from Zhao Yunlan to Shen Wei, which fits the place where it first appears. (It appears at least twice in the sonic powers girl case, and maybe afterwards, I can't recall. It'd be interesting to note which places it gets used in!) The two lyrics where the title appears are "Let your 初心 follow you into hopeless situations" and "The 初心 of a guardian is waiting to be slowly awakened"; it'd likely be very interesting to discuss which interpretations of 初心 fit the best/are most interesting.
