I suspect part of it might've been that the Docklands area was very recently gentrified, and that the Irish people seem to have some hateboner for rice and thus all the rice portions were For Ants. (Finland has more of a rice culture due to being further East, even if it isn't along the Silk Road. Karjalanpiirakka, a very popular bake, has rice in it, frex.)
The whole bit about labor was very informative, and I'll definitely use it in fic someday. Maybe not in present Guardian fic – I intentionally skimmed over the excursion to the past – but Shen Wei can be very thrifty as a habit, in addition to loving all the comforts of modernity.
