July is half gone already, and just yesterday I got a flyer from the town hall about "summer events in [my locale]".

Me: But summer is almost over???

(But for real, people taking their summer vacations in August feels so wrong, like wishing someone Merry Christmas in February. Summer is over! Schools are starting! Except here they aren't. Also the sun has kept setting, so emotionally I've had a May that's three months long.)

Also I'm about to disappear into battleshipex for two-three weeks. Good luck everyone, have fun, sign-ups are over but you can still drop a prompt or twenty if you want.

Our summer school holidays here are mostly in August, so that's the default "summer" month to me as well. July is summer, of course, but I still on reflex think "but it hasn't started". *g* Funny how that sort of thing sticks!

Indeed! I guess it's originally due to the growing season being shorter in Finland, so the kids have to go home to plow the fields and make hay in July rather than August. (And the last days of August are definitely more autumn, especially further north.)

I would actually argue that summer begins in May (in Finland and France both) and then, in Finland at least, the last days of August are already autumn. In any case, even if one exclusively subscribes to the strict three-month interpretation of summer, one would expect a flyer of "Summer Events" to come in June, which is a part of summer, to advertise events in July, which is also summer.

Assuming you are not being sarcastic, no I don't work with children. I was curious about the seasons' length where you reside. I see now in another comment that you're in Finland so that clears it up for me. As for summer events, there is no specific date in my location because summer is very long and can go into September.
