I have published exactly 100 001 words onto AO3 this year so far! I am very happy at pushing through my wordcount goal in August. I'm still a bit hungover, in a way, from the Worldcon trip, but I'll do some art and restart my fics over the weekend.
I signed up for We Die Like Fen round 2 knowing it'd be the final one and wanting to participate at least once. I signed up with a ridiculous set of tags ( preserved for posterity ) and scouted out potential assignments before going off on my Worldcon trip. It ended up so that I had a good idea for assignment #1 and an idea on which tag to write for assignment #2.
Plane ride to Worldcon: I read Revenant Gun by Yoon Ha Lee, part 3 of the Machineries of Empire series. Then I got the matching e-mail and wrote the assignment I had an idea for, resulting in Suddenly Dinosaurs (E, SW/YZ/ZYL)!
Then, at Worldcon, I bought and read (devoured) Arkady Martine's A Memory Called Empire, which affected assignment #2 much more in tone. "I am a spear in the hands of the Sun" was very very much on my mind while I wrote Devour Me Whole (E, SW/ZYL). The Sun imagery of the novel got stuck on the whole "Zhao Yunlan is the Sun in Shen Wei's sky" thing I occasionally do, and then it intermingled. At least one of you admitted to being in both Guardian fandom and having read the book, so, is the influence obvious?
Plane ride from Worldcon: I read Hexarchate Stories by Yoon Ha Lee, which is short stories and the sequel novella in the Machineries universe. I did still have my ghost assignment, who had requested Undisclosed Fandom and thus showcased openness for weird and wacky crossovers, so I wrote Voidmoth Groundwards Floating (G, gen) since I had the idea in my head for it! I suppose this showed an increasing amount of influence by my reading material on my Guardian fic – nothing, inspiration, crossover. :P
I also received three wonderful gifts!
