Discussion on the vidders discord revealed to me that aaronartium had done a vidding workshop that included videographic crit exercises. The point was to pick a vid, watch it, and then write down initial impressions (e.g. "zooms at the start give good energy", "POV gets muddled in the middle", "color grading makes timeline hopping easy to follow", to make some up), and then view it a second time. On the second viewing, you go into greater detail: in a table, write down the timestamp, what happens at the timestamp, and whether it's good, bad, or neutral, and why. Finally, write a list of things you want to emulate (or avoid) about the vid.
I won't be able to do one per week like for the original workshop, but perhaps one every two weeks/one every month? I think the first vids will be something by hollywoodgrrl and something by 1jonde1 (both on YouTube). If you have recs for Star Wars (OT, PT, ST, TCW, Rebels, SWTOR, KOTOR), Guardian (cdrama), or Legend of Yunze vids that a) are on YouTube/not age-locked on Vimeo, and b) do something interesting, give me a shout.
Not sure how public I'll make the whole thing (access list? just me?), but I think I'll conclude with a public list of vids I watched and what I want to emulate about each of them. Then I might even try putting that advice into practice, lol.
