Adventures in hair taping

(Hair taping: nothing to do with tape! Instead, it's using needle and thread to sew a hairstyle in place instead of bobby pins.)

I've been experimenting with hair taping for the lulz and I think I've figured out a technique for how to make the stitches secure and at least moderately nonobvious. I've been doing crown braids (a Dutch/additive ripe braid on each side, cross over at the back, rest the drawn-up "tails" on the opposite braid) since I enjoy the silhouette and the second braid gives extra grip/support to the pinned-up braid. On Saturday I did double Dutch braids and taped them up, intending to unravel the thing when I went to bed ... except circumstances conspired to keep me away from my bed. (I think I finally slept at 1am? I'm fine, just inconvenienced.) I was too lazy to unravel the thing (so much hunting for hair-colored thread) so I just flopped into bed and fell asleep — and the hairstyle still looked okay the next morning! I dismantled it for a shower, ofc, but I was intrigued by the possibility of hair styling for multiple days. So yesterday I did a similar hairstyle in the morning (albeit with rope braids, which tend to be more prone to disraveling), wrapped my head in a silk scarf for bed, and lo and behold, it's wholly functional and secure today! A bit boho with flyaways, but still, well, professional enough for any workplace I'd end up in. (And as an updo, 100% cleanroom ready, which is more likely to be something I care about.) I'll do the Dutch braids version after the next time I shower and see how long they actually last + how well they hold up to vigorous rolling-on-the-floor exercise...

No, though I did find out about hair taping from her! And I wonder if I could manage to do a seni crines onto my own hair, though that would require a structural cord.

Update: did manage to do an okay version of the non-simplified one using a doubled-up silk scarf as the cord. Though it's not going into my regular rotation – I couldn't get the hair stick attachment method to work and had to sew the ends in place on my forehead, plus it covers my ears and is thus very rustly.
