I have been going through my All-Purpose Notes Document, and on line 350 (after deleting like 50 lines of accidental duplicates and irrelevant shit) I found my SWTOR storyline tier list! Behold.
Fucking amazing:
Jedi Consular – absolutely amazing. Started off strong with some prompts to think about what sort of Jedi you want to play, then continued with a pleasantly non-generic action hero narrative. It even included diplomacy! A really nice and Jedi-like story, brushing against the key tenets of Jedidom. You get a padawan who feels like a padawan and your first companion is another great opportunity to reflect on what sort of Jedi you want to be + emphasis on one's ability to interact with people different to you. Also there was some video game archaeology.
Pressed my buttons:
Sith Inquisitor – should probably be renamed Sith Archaeologist and be the better for it. My two buttons are 1) video game archaeology and 2) tossing around lightning like it's on a 90% off discount. This story delivered! Including a companion who is an archaeologist. This is also the funniest protagonist.
Good stories:
Imperial Agent – while Chapter 3 jumped the shark slightly, this was an enjoyable story that did interesting things with video game mechanics. That and the most thematically apt set of companions raise this to the top of its category.
Trooper – the villains are extremely compelling, and being a soldier receiving orders made the whole questing experience highly naturalistic and fitting. The companion acquisition process felt natural as well.
Sith Warrior – a solid storyline involving Sith politics. While this has a consistent arc and the earliest introduction of the end boss, the companion acquisition process doesn't feel as natural as for the Trooper and the companions don't fit nearly as well as for the Agent.
Eminently skippable:
Jedi Knight – a generic and facile hero narrative. Like a retread of KOTOR 1 with all the innovative and interesting parts cut out.
This should not have been in the game:
Smuggler – would have been improved by being renamed Republic Privateer. There is a tragic dearth of actual smuggling, the first four companions all seem much too serious to fit with the attempt at light-hearted caper story, and the story pulls a massive bait and switch with saying you're an independent smuggler and then 5 seconds later forcing you to work for the Republic for no good reason at all. Despite the marketing, not actually that funny. Go play Sith Inquisitor instead.
