What I like about them
He's wry, he's witty, he looks like a puppy, he's the head of a powerful spy agency – I want to tear him apart psychologically. And then let him have a nice retirement.

What I dislike about them
Not enough pagetime? I don't really have Watsonian dislikes. Doylistically, the whole "powerful Imperialist spy agency" isn't treated with much weight later on, it feels.

An interesting AU for this character
An Aral/Cordelia/Simon/Alys sedoretu one? Or a canon divergence, Negri-doesn't-die one where he must choose between his loyalty to Aral and his loyalty to Negri.

A crossover
I really like the idea of Simon Illyan as either in StateSec or Military Intelligence of the People's Republic of Haven (Honor Harrington series). Or Simon Illyan (Saimona Ilanar?), internal security advisor to His Serenity Edrehasivar Zhas (The Goblin Emperor).

Headcanon!
He grew up speaking Russian/to at least one Russian-speaking parent. (He's based on Illya Kuryakin, who is a Russian, no?)

The people I ship romantically with this character
Captain Negri, in a really fucked-up pederasty-ish spy training way. Ezar, in a colossal abuse of authority way (see: Owner). Aral, in a fucked-up dubcon way. (For those three, the idea is that the idea of saying no/being able to say no just does not occur to Simon. For Negri and Ezar, combine with not caring about Simon's opinion.)
Also, Alys, in a rainbows and sunlight way. Well, not quite: in a way where she does still hold his reins, but they're retired, so there's no need to hold them tight. A bit more "collaborative partnership between horse and rider" than "you WILL obey (no need to even add the "or else")".
Or Gregor! The dynamics from jmtorres' Gestures and Words Unspoken are wonderful, and yes please more of screwed-up Simon.
He can also be creeped on in a sexy way by Serg and Ges.

My BroTP for this character
Well, if there is Simon/Aral, then Simon & Alys; if there's Simon/Alys, then Simon & Aral. Simon & Cordelia?

One thing I wish would happen / had happened with this character in canon.
Being, ah, conditioned by Negri, or showing more of him in Ezar's sphere of influence.
