Liveblog! Engsubbed s1e01 (s1e02 is out in the raw, and should be subbed within the next few days), and the novel this is based on. Novel's the original, and has more stuff out, so unless you're allergic to books, go read it. It's amazing. The animation makes some adaptation decisions I find questionable, and won't be M/M.
Intro text is nice enough, and then it segues into trailer 1 stuff! It's from during the Sunshot Campaign, as there are Wen sect people (from the "溫" on their lanterns) and WWX reanimates Wen sect people against them!
The cup falling looks almost 3D animated with just a bit of filters.
Wei Wuxian's death and the soul-summoning are very breathtakingly animated. And oooohh they set up the focus on the past here!
Opening! I like the animation style for this. I recognize a bunch of it is just reused animation/drawings from elsewhere but with a different background layer, enabled by modern technology, but still, nice!
23 years???? It was 13 in canon!
The "Wei Wuxian's eyes" bit for the awakening was nice! And Lil'Apple turns up much earlier.
Interesting how they really emphasize that Mo Xuanyu must be considered a servant due to his mother/grandmother; later, I suppose they'll tell us that Wei Wuxian's father was a servant. Anyway, interesting parallel. I'd have to check if they did it in canon as well.
Wei Wuxian ... comes across as a lot more bloodthirsty here. None of the "ah, you really got the wrong guy for wiping out your family!" sentiment of the novel. Wei Wuxian just kicks Mo Ziyuan rather than opening the door on A-Tong, too. Goes straight for beating them up rather than humiliation. Though the donkeyback chase scene is sort of hilarious.
OH NOOO MO ZIYUAN RUNS IN no this is too much embarrassment squick I preferred the novel.
Jingyi catches Wei Wuxian from falling on his face and gets harassed in return. Poor kid. I also liked the novel's "You came into my room in the middle of the night! I don't know about you, but I still want to marry a good man", but I understand why they had to axe it. Ah, censorship. I do wonder why Mo Xuanyu got thrown out of the Jin sect in donghua canon, though...
Wei Wuxian doesn't check the spirit attracting flags and is instead near the dead Mo Ziyuan for no reason. Ah, he saw Ziyuan steal a spirit attracting flag?
Huh, the arm is behaving really differently than in the book. Probably to make it more visually impressive.
Wei Wuxian seeing the arm coming towards him and SMILING was 100% my id and I am 100% here for it!
Wei Wuxian are you proud of the Lan boys being so good at cultivating at their young age
Sizui your speech is nice. Also very tailored for my id. Well done. I approve.
Wei Wuxian's voice is awfully seductive when he commands the corpses. I mean, if I were a corpse, I'd totally come back to life if he whispered in my ear like that.
Lan Wangji comes to the rescue, with amazing special effects!
Aaaand ending! Scenes through windowframes.
All in all, I understand why they made the changes they did, and I don't mind the streamlining of the number of people to kill or the fight, though it did make Wei Wuxian look less impressive. I do object to Wei Wuxian appearing so bloodthirsty at the start. I liked the rising tension of the start of the novel, trying to figure out WTF if going on with the deaths, but that works better as a novel and they only have so many episodes. The special effects were cool and impressive.
