19. Least favorite character
Guo Changcheng. He is annoying and useless and insipid and in general a cringefest. There are better ways to do the optimist do-gooder! Stop making them naïve and stupid! Could Guo Changcheng please have been eaten by a Venus flytrap to give everyone at the SID some Emotional Pain With Which to Continue the Fight or something? Argh.

Second place: Sang Zan for sinking my Wang Zheng/Zhu Hong ship, being annoying, and het-ing it up. Thankfully he only had very little screentime compared to Guo Changcheng.

Third place: the Regent of Dixing, because I need to deal with him in the fic and he is annoying to write. Can I have him die quasi-offscreen by a falling rock at a construction site so his death becomes a warning message about the importance of hard hats? Would that be cheating and unsatisfactory?

I like Shen Qiao very much (and that reminds me, I need to start working on figuring out how to write for Thousand Autumns). And the Regent is at least plot useful on many occasions; I don't see much point to the other two. (I think killing him with falling rocks is entirely justified, fwiw.)

\o/ Thousand Autumns stuff! I would also sorta wish to figure out how to write for it, but a reread might be in order, and I suspect that canon will deliver on the stuff I want, anyway.

The Regent is plot useful, unlike the other two, but he is being an annoyance in this fic, so: rocks fall, the Regent dies, no-one misses him.

Yeah, that's the problem with writing for an open (at least in translation) canon; I really like the world and want to play in it, but it's hard to do so without knowing the full story. I keep threatening to MTL it, and maybe one of these days I will.

No one ever misses the Regent, because the Regent has no friends or loyalties; the perils of bootlicking.

Agreed about all three. I was so disappointed when I realized that the character development I'd eagerly anticipated for Guo Changcheng was not (or barely) coming and he never became less annoying.

The only character development he seemed to get was being more offscreen for a long stretch, which did make him much more palatable. But then he *came back*.

Guo Changcheng still gives me contact embarrassment, but it's a bit like I've trained myself to like him. Or that the fact that characters I care about care about him makes me care about him a little bit. It might also be self-defense, though - he gets so much screentime that my life is a lot easier if I kinda like him than if I go GRRRRR every time he shows up. ^_^;

(On some of his worst offenses (like we recently discussed re: the freezer scene), my brain actually jumps to being annoyed with the writers, because it's so brain-breakingly stupid that... I almost feel sorry for Guo Changcheng the character because his writers were so dumb.)

I'm sort of in a similar place in some senses, in that I am not incandescent in rage every time he shows up, even though that would be 100% justified after e.g. the freezer incident.

Ah yes, the "I'm not bad stupid, I'm just drawn written that way" defense. I sort of get it, but it's ... he's still too stupid, and I will loathe him as a symbol of writerly mispriorities if nothing else. *g*
