29. Favorite interpretation of why the Hallows do the things they do
They're sentient and operating on a different level of morality to us. We are ants to them, and why should they be bothered by sacrificing an ant? It's not like an ant could understand the big picture like them – or even experience emotions properly.
(Alternatively, Yashou and Dixingites' ancestors escaped to Earth, but their enemies sent an asteroid of nanomatter or whatever after them. Ma Gui and Fu You fashioned the Hallows from it, and the Hallows continue the mission of cutting off Dixing from the surrounding universe and killing them slowly, though hampered by their small mass.)

Date: 2019-10-07 16:37 (UTC)Ooh, that's interesting! And finaglable to match canon events.
In general, the Hallows are very interesting and also not really explained in canon. Plus the fact that the more one looks at their actions, the worse they look.

They're not necessarily mutually exclusive, but sort of imply different approaches in fic. I also have some other ideas for the Hallows (e.g. Dixingians are emissaries built by an alien race in the human form, and the Hallows are tools to turn humans into Dixingians that have awesome powers), and I think the Hallows are an excellent place for cosmic worldbuilding and vast plots.

With the ant version, I wonder what they make of people who are more like... mice-sized. You know, Envoys with a lot of power. Would they register more, etc.
I couldn't take you up on that question because the Hallows break my brain and seem to do ALL THE THINGS but incoherently, so I instinctively tend to reduce their ~magic~ by taking them very literally and limited to what the show says they do explicitly, but that doesn't lend itself to a good big picture view, or even a 'why'. (As in, the dial can exchange life force. Why? How? No idea.)

Date: 2019-10-09 07:17 (UTC)I mean, the plot works only if the Envoy is an ant, too. An overpowered ant who should be preserved for a while for the Hallows' purposes, but an ant still, a pawn to be pushed around.
The Hallows are a bit brain-breaking, yes. The options are (IMO):
1. We are like ants to the Hallows and cannot comprehend them
2. We don't know what the Hallows are for and have incorrect ideas on their workings
3. The Hallows are hostile and intentionally hiding that
...all of which require some handwaving. I have ideas for 2 and 3, but 1 is a bit boring ficwise.
