...if they did bring him to get snipped, would the balls grow back when he transforms to human and back again? How does the Yashou transformation thing even work? (And I guess he'd have run off in human form when he discovered the purpose of the vet appointment?) Wait, did Da Qing even have any owners/human caretakers beyond Zhao Yunlan, or did he just exist as a stray cat, eating everyone's food?
If Da Qing has his balls, don't male cats spray a lot? Maybe that's part of the reason the apartment is so messy. (I mean, it's not like he'd ever pick up. Picking up is for the servants, and Da Qing is the king of the food chain.)
But do we ever see kitty Da Qing's genitals? Maybe he's a girl in cat form. Who says Yashou gender maps onto our own? Maybe genderfluidity is the common thing for them! Who knows? Perhaps Da Qing has a womb in his cat form and Da Ji's cat form is the one that produces the sperm!

Date: 2019-12-16 20:37 (UTC)I assumed that Da Qing was an intact tomcat, but he doesn't look like one. He's so plump and beautiful. But then, the King of Cats probably wouldn't engage in the behaviors that make most intact male cats look skinny and scraggly. Or, sure, his cat form could be female. Intact females are also liable to mess up your home and ruin your life. Or maybe Da Qing is permanently neutered, but only in cat form. Maybe Yashou normally only have reproductive organs in human form? So many options.
Even if he hasn't had any other owners, he could still have been snipped via trap-neuter-release or somesuch. However, most tomcats do spray, and if they're neutered after they've learned the behavior, they don't necessarily stop. Poor Zhao Yunlan.

So the humanoid form would be the "true" form and they'd be Dixingians who can shapeshift into an animal form (and have their own communities and surface privileges).

Date: 2019-12-18 03:42 (UTC)That's a really interesting concept, I had thoughts along those lines as well at one point, while contemplating the evolutionary split between Dixing and Yashou. Not sure if we know when/if speciation happened (actually, humans can definitely interbreed with Dixingren, right? So maybe speciation is an irrelevant question). This definitely implies that different Yashou tribes should be able to interbreed, though. Which...I have questions about that too.

Date: 2019-12-18 18:20 (UTC)I have my own ideas on it (several contradictory ones, in fact!) and at least one of them I want to maintain as a fic idea (to be attempted after that casefic I threatened you with *g*). So yeah. The infodump at the start states that the separation into Dixing and Yashou happened before the spaceship arrived on Haixing, but the visuals show some sort of ... alien energy? going into humans and animals/plants and turning them into Dixingians and Yashou, respectively. It's also not clear how much of that is the truth and how much is the legends passed on to the present, especially when combined with Professor Ouyang and Shen Wei's discussion on Dixingians as being mutated humans, basically.
