Stuff relating to social media: There has been something of a kerfluffle lately about Tumblr natives wanting a reblog functionality on Dreamwidth, which I discovered via [personal profile] tozka's Fandom meta shortpost collection; the comments have a nice discussion on DW vs Tumblr etiquettes and interaction modes, as well as on the role of comms on DW. It's interesting.

The AO3 collection moderation queue quest continues. AO3 Support replied to us all with copypasted boilerplate; it and the not-actually-a-workaround they suggested was hilarious as a reply to my e-mail, which had explained in detail why the not-actually-a-workaround they suggested was not, actually, a workaround. [personal profile] morbane's amended the original post with the text of the e-mail, and comments have reawakened. There is also some discussion over at trobadora's post.

I had an idea about what I wanted to post, but then I received an e-mail with a job offer, and my brain was taken over by AHHHH. Details of starting date up in the air, but I'll have to move city next year. I'll generate the [community profile] space_swap schedule once I'm clearer on mine.

Oh, now I remember what I wanted to say originally! I am apparently very super blunt or something. On a MDZS Discord server, in response to another person saying something offhand, I posted my opinions on Wei Wuxian being called dense. (He ... isn't.) Lightly edited, mostly in punctuation and replacing potentially-vague pronouns with phrases:

Unpopular opinion, but I wouldn't call Shen Qingqiu or Wei Wuxian "dense" – they're both quick on the uptake and smart, but they're both limited by the fact that they never reassessed their starting assumptions of the love interest. They both thought "ok love interest is Like That and hates me" and it might've been valid at the start, even if not now, so they try to fit all the love interest's behavior into the "love interest hates me" mental model they have of him. They're oblivious to the love interest's advances because of that, but they're not dumb, and they have reasons for being oblivious. Basically people going "aww wifi so dense" makes me go "??? are you skipping all the scenes that aren't about the main couple being cute at each other?" since no, he's not dense about human interaction or power dynamics or whatnot at all, unlike how a bunch of people characterize him.

Alas, I can't ignore it, due to the above showing up in eg fics as an opinion the author genuinely holds, and people really widening it so that Fanon Wei Wuxian is kinda dense and dumb, whereas Canon Wei Wuxian isn't really dense: he just doesn't see himself as a valid life partner to Lan Wangji due to eg class stuff and genders, so he can't even begin to consider Lan Wangji's actions from a potentially romantic perspective. Ergo, I try to push back against it, since the "wifi so dense" thing isn't the most accurate way to phrase it, doesn't imo capture the background, and tends to engulf actual canon characterization and make for OOC fic.

(A mod thought the above was super impolite and unfriendly, and threatened modly action should any more "negative conversation" take place. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I stand by my words, and while I may have been blunt, me being rude doesn't look like that. Mostly sharing it here for the content.)

I am also going to humblebrag about my Yuletide wordcount: it is Lots! It is more than last year! I might even add to it still, with another treat! :P I have also shaken my gift, and it looks appealing.
extrapenguin: Wei Wuxian (from Modao Zushi) playing the flute in front of a red Sun. (mdzs)
Family has started to descend upon me, so while I might nobly post something at some point next week, my posting spree will probably be over. It was nice while it lasted, and ran for almost two weeks in a row! My Yuletide assignment is done, but I still have a treat I want to make cohere. At least my dear beta's been very helpful.

For those of you new to DW, every year from 1 to 15 Jan, [community profile] snowflake_challenge will be posting a prompt for discussion/talking about. They generally include stuff like "rec 3+ fanworks" and such. The topics are roughly the same each year, so I won't be doing it in 2019, as my fandom-related milestones don't really change much, year to year. Here's the revamped promo graphic:

As for the actual contents of this post, I was looking at my stats page, and realized that each and every work of mine had at least one bookmark, save the one I wrote for [community profile] space_swap and my Yuletide assignment, which is still unrevealed. Modao Zushi fandom seems to be really into bookmarking stuff! Even this experimental thing no-one clicked on has a bookmark! (I, on the other hand, bookmark none of the things. Except maybe resources like the Liang Primer [archiveofourown.org profile] ofsevenseas wrote for Nirvana in Fire fandom.) This is kinda cool, as I've received 328 bookmarks this year so far, and 591 bookmarks over the whole of my writing career. (55% of my bookmarks were this year! Then again, 54% of my published wordcount has happened this year, too.) I can finally start using bookmarks in my year-end stats in a reasonable way!

My subscriptions have gone way up, too – 33 people have subscribed to me, up from 5 in 2016. (I didn't write down the stat for 2017, boo.) Modao Zushi fandom people seem to like subscribing to works, too – I did admittedly start actually posting WIPs, but a bunch of my oneshots have subscriptions as well. Perhaps people are using them also as private bookmarks? (Highest subscription count was 54, for Rediscovery, Reconstruction.)

In other Modao Zushi news, I have 7k of fic that stalled back in ... September? I started writing it in late August, then stalled on like the 4th of Sept when I realized I'd have to write the Sunshot Campaign again, and I didn't wanna. Then I wrote Rediscovery, Reconstruction plus ~10k of other WIP stuff, including my Yuletide fic. So I'm posting the first bit of words beneath a cut, to see if anyone has any opinions on it. (I'm not expecting any – very few people on DW are in the fandom.)

Upon rereading, I discovered that my writing skills have leveled up in the interim, and Lan Wangji is perhaps a little OOC. Completely unbeta'd and unrevised. The finished product will pair up more people than the fic's main characters, and I realized that ship tags are technically spoilers, so I think if this ever goes anywhere, I'll first post it without any ship tags! The readers can then nail-bitingly observe Jiang Cheng's love life! (I do, however, promise that Wei Wuxian will not end up with an OC of any stripe.) Setting is very technically omegaverse without betas, but given that heats don't exist, it's just people who smell of things with normalized mpreg. Qianyuan = alpha; kunze = omega.

~500 words, bit is maybe T-rated )

...actually, I might as well dump another of my ideas here! Name magic is always a cool thing, and Modao Zushi affords us true-names in an easy way: birth names! (Cons: I would have to write an entire fic referring to Jiang Cheng as Jiang Wanyin, but whatever, I'm sure readers would manage.) This one has a plot that's based on post-Sunshot Campaign stuff, which the translation hadn't gotten to yet at the time I acquired the idea. (21.9.)

~300 words, G-rated )

As for My Unconquerable Soul, that one's been on the backburner, also due to needing more stuff to know about the translation. I have one aside written and two more planned, as well as an outline for the rest, but ... I needed the vacation from it all. Let's see over the winter break.

My icon collection grows! This one is a crop of a fanart by [twitter.com profile] xiyoumiyu, probably. Full ver in this tweet. Huge thanks to reverse google image search, because no-one believes in crediting fanart.

Week before last, I finished up posting a long WIP of mine for Modao Zushi, hence the shiny new icon. Compared to my prior fandoms, this one is pretty allergic to leaving any feedback, especially ones with more than two sentences, but I'm actually pleased with the response to this one! (Mostly because it had one regular commenter who left very long comments that basically picked out everything I'd meant to accomplish and approved of it all. I, uh, may have doodled hearts.) I'm especially thrilled with it, and the few super positive bookmark comments, since this is very niche content. First of all, it's coming of age, but set in the aftermath of sexual abuse by an authority figure, so the premise counts as dark. Second of all, the fandom's canon juggernaut doesn't get together. I'll give you the link and copypaste the bookmarks' text, as they're actually a really good advertisement, then share some thoughts about this fandom vs my mode of fandoming, and how nicheness affects feedback.

I was unsure about this, because very often rape-recovery fics turn out to be rape-porn in deceitful packaging. I was also very wrong, because this is one of the most deeply-moving fics about recovery, healing, and personal growth that I've ever read. The characters are removed from their canon-selves, but in a way that stays true to themselves and adds another level of depth to their personalities. Wei Wuxian isn't shipped with Lan Wangji here, which is unusual for this fandom and was a turn-off for me at the start, but here it is done so in a way that feels very true to the circumstances the characters are presented in, and truthfully, having read up to chapter 4, I don't see any other way Wuxian's relationship with Wangji could have been presented. The OC's are also well developed and add to the story rather than subtract from it, and I yearn for every new insight into the characters that I am granted.

Bittersweet, but the bitterness comes at the beginning so that Wei Wuxian's personal growth can bring the sweetness at the end. I very much recommend, and I also suggest that at the end of each chapter you read the author's comments as well.

[archiveofourown.org profile] Gerifalte
ahhh, this was gold. I couldn't stop reading until the very end, and the setting is /well/ fleshed-out -very believable, consistent and real. Don't even get me started on the OCs, for all intents and purposes /people/ you could connect to and take an interest in. I was very invested in their development and context, to the point I honestly wanted to make them happy. Also LQR characterizarion is the very best, and the foreshadowing was spot-on (I had my suspicions from the first time LYH talked about her backstory, so I didn't feel like it came from the blue.

All in all, 12/10 would read again.

PS: gdi I just realized this isn't the comment section. I hope the author gets to read this -or that I remember to drop a comment when I have more time. Fingers crossed.

Again, the poll is nonbinding, but after I've finished this Yuletide draft, I could do with another project to write. I'll be backing up my tumblr this week, but in the meanwhile, I decided to be whimsical so as to post a bit more. Perhaps I'll resurrect Music Monday Meme next week.

On the dying wastes of Tumblr, I encountered [tumblr.com profile] birdsquirrel's OT3 classification:
every ot3 has these very important roles:

person a, who runs headlong into crazy bullshit
person b, who acts like they’re too sensible to run headlong into crazy bullshit, but is really just as bad as person a
person c, who actually tries to avoid running headlong into crazy bullshit, but keeps getting dragged into it by the other two anyway

So I decided to come up with some OT3s I (might) ship, and slot them into this three-way categorization! Now, I generally am no OTPer and can psych myself into writing one (1) shipfic for pretty much any combination, so here goes:

Modao Zushi )

Guardian )

Do I ship other OT3s, even in theory? IDK. Feel free to poke me in the comments with an OT3, and I'll speculate about how they act around crazy bullshit!

This one is technically not a fansong, but the drawings are nice and the closest thing to a happy ending these two seem to get, and the song is super soothing. It is also now my voice headcanon for Song Lan!

Music: 天地缓缓 by 伦桑 (an actual non-fansong)
Drawings & original video: __円 on bilibili

Thanks to yjtc from the Nirvana in Fire Discord/[tumblr.com profile] fwoopersongs for helping me with my translation questions! Any mistakes that remain are entirely mine. The Zhuangzi, also called 南华真经 (Divine Classic of the South) is an ancient Chinese text from the late Warring States period which contains stories and anecdotes that exemplify the carefree nature of the ideal Daoist sage. One theme is accepting death as a natural transformation, which Song Lan doesn't want to do.

Another fansong for Modao Zushi I translated. This is more of a vague spoilers on the romance plot vid, but it's vague. I've posted more about the canon elsewhere, but the tl;dr is that it is a Chinese M/M webnovel about an infamous necromancer who has just returned from the dead and is baffled about WTF is happening, as he gets dragged into a mystery immediately. It's told in the present plotline (unraveling this mystery of "whose body parts are these anyway?" that also ends up unraveling mysteries of the past) and past flashback plotline that tells how this cheerful, earnest young man went down the path of necromancy and became so loathed by everyone that he was destroyed by the entire cultivational (magic) world. I'm requesting it for Yuletide, with requests that are all canon divergence or stuff one is able to do without being spoiled. The fan translation into English is available for free online, and is a regularly-updating WIP that's past the halfway mark.

I have two other fansongs/fanvids I have timed and mostly-sane subs for, but one of them was done already by someone else before I could clean up. Their account was terminated for copyright violations since, but I'll leave 星辰曾照我/Stars Once Shone on Me for a bit longer. The other one, 天地缓缓/The Whole World, Little by Little, I will do next, though as I'm kinda busy currently I think it'll take a few weekends more to get the translation checked.

Hi! I'm going to quote some textev on Wei Wuxian's class issues. I'm focusing on the Poisons arc, since there we get the most of it.

Let's start by defining class issues. Here, by "class issues" I mean that his self-esteem and way of interacting with others, especially Jiang Cheng, are significantly affected by the fact that his father was a servant. I am not arguing that Wei Wuxian consciously thinks of himself as a Jiang sect servant. Instead, the effect is more subtle.

三毒: The arc is called "Sandu", like Jiang Cheng's sword. (K translates it here to "Poisons".) The Three Poisons the arc title refers to are greed, anger, and ignorance. The greed is mostly from the Wen sect, the anger universal, but the ignorance is the interesting point.

The setting: Wei Wuxian is 17. The Wen sect is out to get him, but he hasn't realized that yet. This is the last flush of his childhood.

Novel-only, because I hate the donghua. Stuff might be off by a year.

-400 (time when Wen Mao, Lan An, and Baoshan Sanren were running around)
-350 (Lan Yi, Lan An's granddaughter, starts to exist around here)
-24 Qingheng-jun (assuming Lan Xichen born a year after wedding)
-21 Lan Qiren (assuming age gap of Lan Qiren & Qingheng-jun = that of Two Jades; could be as late as -18-ish)
-7 Nie Mingjue (this is just guesswork, but somewhere in this ballpark)
-3 Lan Xichen
-2 Jiang Yanli, Wen Chao (WC also maybe at -1)
-1 Jin Zixuan, Jin Guangyao (either exactly same age as Jin Zixuan or exactly one year younger)
00 Lan Wangji, Wei Wuxian, Jiang Cheng, Nie Huaisang
05 Xiao Xingchen, Song Lan
08 Xue Yang
10 Mo Xuanyu
12 A-Qing
15 (Wei Wuxian at the Cloud Recesses)
16 (Wei Wuxian wins archery competition at Discussion Conference)
17 (Sunshot Campaign starts)
18 Lan Sizhui; (Sunshot Campaign ends here or in 19)
19 rest of the juniors, maybe also Sizhui or Jin Ling
20 Jin Ling
21 (Wei Wuxian dies)
24 (Yueyang Cheng massacre)
26 (Xiao Xingchen dies)
34 (the present day)

Errata/notes:
  • Lan Xichen could also be at -2, in which case Qingheng-jun is at -23; Lan Qiren is unknown, but he's younger than his brother, though not too much (due to the responsibilities piling onto him so soon)
  • Jiang Cheng's and Wei Wuxian's parents are likely also born around -24
  • Nie Mingjue is guesswork, but he's significantly older than his brother, so roughly that ballpark
  • Wen Chao is 1-2 years older than Wei Wuxian, so -1 or -2
  • Song Lan is at 05 because someone willing to be friends with a 17-year-old is likely 17 as well
  • Xue Yang could be born in 06, 07, or 08, but it makes more sense for him to be as young as possible ie 08
  • the juniors are born 18-20, depending on stuff like what time of year it is and such, but that's an approximation that should fit
  • Lan Sizhui is 1-2 years older than Jin Ling, but whether either of them was born in 19 depends on the year cutoff
  • the Yi City timeline requires its own post, but Xiao Xingchen died pretty young
  • Jiang Cheng either is or was the youngest Sect Leader; if he is currently, then Jin Guangyao is older than him
  • the Sunshot Campaign can't have lasted over two years – more likely one – due to the crampedness of the post-Campaign timeline wrt Wei Wuxian's downfall

[personal profile] melannen posted to [community profile] fictional_fans about Three-Point Characterization, which is an interesting tool. Tl;dr: we all have ~3 key characterization points for characters, and stuff that uses the same 3 points we see as IC and stuff that doesn't we see as OOC. It was kind of hard to articulate, but I posted about Modao Zushi's main pair (Wei Wuxian, Lan Wangji) and a teritary character I had already done a similar thing for due to fic (Song Lan) in this comment. I might return to do more characters, but for a bunch of them I know there's more stuff coming, and that stuff is important, so I'll return to it later. I might do a "sort the characters into Guilds of Ravnica" post later on, though, just for fun.

One of Modao Zushi's themes and topics is family and growing up. To that end, we see a bunch of dads onpage, as well as dads we don't really see much of, but whom we can judge based on how their children end up. Limiting my observations to dads of the older generation (because I hereby present a list of dads, from worst to best:

Jiang Fengmian
Okay. This guy just sucks. He treats his foster-son better than his own bioson, which caused a huge inferiority complex in the biokid, and made his wife go to war with him over the foster kid's status in the family. He made the foster kid the head disciple (despite the bioson being a Jiang disciple for longer, and also being the sect leader's son like come on), earning said child the ire of his wife, and he didn't do anything that might soothe his wife's ruffled feathers or alleviate her valid concerns. He only ever praised the foster son and expressed disappointment in the bioson, and did his arguing with his wife in front of the children. As a result, he has raised one foster-son who grew up to immense self-abnegation just to survive and try not to usurp the righteous heir in people's eyes, one bio-son with a terrible inferiority complex, and one bio-daughter who is extremely passive and withdrawing.

Qingheng-jun
Completely absent from his children's lives emotionally, yet physically nearby, reminding them of his existence and the fact that he chose to repent for marrying a woman who killed a teacher of his, rather than ... raising the children he fathered on that woman. Then he left all the childrearing on his brother.

Jin Guangshan
A terrible husband, and a deadbeat and absent dad for most of his kids. He was nice and spoiled his official son, and was nice to Mo Xuanyu when he remembered he existed, but also a total asshole to Jin Guangyao and the other illegitimate kids he didn't wish to acknowledge.

Nie sr
While he barely appears onpage, Nie Mingjue and Nie Huaisang's father was at least marginally competent, since his son is willing to avenge him for reasons other than sect honor. On the other hand, the saber spirit thing, although not his fault, must've put a damper on his children.

Wei Changze
While Wei Changze was dead for most of his child's critical developmental years, Wei Wuxian is psychologically remarkably resilient even after Jiang Fengmian's parenting, so Wei Changze and Zangse Sanren must've done at least something right.

Wen Ruohan
The Wen sect may have been evil, but Wen Ruohan's sons seem to have gotten along just fine, and when one of them is in dire straits, he makes a beeline straight for his dad, indicating that he trusts his dad to solve his problems. Neither of Wen Ruohan's sons had self-esteem issues.

My own description of the canon, featuring neither of the characters who appear in this video:

Our main character, Wei Wuxian, is a smart and shameless guy driven to necromancy by circumstances (think self-sacrificing kind mad scientist with class issues), and is hated by the entire cultivational world. He was killed when his powers backfired on him while besieged. 13 years later, a gay lunatic performs a demonic sacrifice ritual to get revenge on his asshole family, and suddenly Wei Wuxian has an all-new body, an all-new mystery to solve relating to a disembodied hand, and this super righteous iceberg guy Lan Wangji has suddenly started protecting him. Oh, and while he's at it, he wants to keep his true identity secret, because if he doesn't, people will come to murder him and he'd rather not die again.

The novel is super gripping, and it's told in the present and flashbacks to the past that shed light on how this kind-hearted guy could come to be hated by the entire cultivational world. It's really dark, but the darkness is only really blatant when one thinks about it a bit more. Wei Wuxian is shameless and hilarious as a protagonist and narrator, and he has a lot of good interactions with both his eventual love interest and a bunch of other people that are ripe material for fic, and the secondary characters have their own interactions with each other.

I've written a bunch of fics for my new shiny, Modao Zushi. One of them involved translating some poems from Chinese plus composing some poems in Chinese. (This is because I like to run before I can walk.) Poems are for Despite the Warning Signs, recited/written a 14-year-old whose passport reads "Drama Land".

I'm also modding a Discord for Modao Zushi and the author's other works. Come chat! Invite link.

I made a Discord server to discuss Mo Xiang Tong Xiu's works in, to attract all these modern newfangled kids. Here's the link! To clarify, this is for The Scum Villain's Self-Saving System, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, and Heaven Official's Blessing. Also adaptations thereof, but I'm here just for the books.
