Chu Shuzhi! (Wow, this fandom does share opinions a lot!) He's a loyal Envoy fanboy who dresses in all-black, he's a convicted murderer whose sense of humor is laughing when other people get thwacked on the head or electrocuted, he's genuinely loyal to Zhao Yunlan (even if it's more subtle and he isn't afraid to be a bit of an asshole about it), he's efficient and hard-working, he isn't dumb (he did literature review on the Hanga beliefs before going into the field!), and of all the SID people, he's the one I'd most like as my neighbor – quiet, low chance of explosions. He's at a nice spot of having subsurface complexity/hidden depths, and is not just a one-dimensional archetype. Other favorite Chu Shuzhi moments: him being the one to question Zhao Xinci when he took over a SID case and lambasted Zhao Yunlan (because it's not like Zhao Xinci can fire him); going all out so Bo Bi could avenge his brother; him being the one who asks Zhu Hong WTF happened to make Zhao Yunlan lose his sight. Oh, and he has a very cool Dixing power!

I love that scene so much!!! I think that's the first time that we really see the loyalty to Zhao Yunlan this clearly, not hidden behind grumpiness or sarcasm. Such a good moment.

Yes! And he's also angsting about Guo Changcheng doubting his loyalty to Zhao Yunlan in the same episode. It's such a good moment. (And also more proof that he's not just the dumb muscle – he must be conscious of the fact that Zhao Xinci cannot fire him without creating a diplomatic incident.)

+1 Professional and not prone to histrionics! Even his cultural affinity for drama mostly manifests through his responses to other people, instead of spontaneously making trouble for his neighbors.

I mean, I guess this might've been supposed to be Bobby? But the hanzi are Bo Bi, and his brother's name is xiao-Jie instead of another more anglophone name, so I refer to him as Bo Bi. (And his brother can be Bo Jie?)

It's funny, he was my favorite on my first watch and I'm less and less interested in him as the rewatches go by. But he would be a good neighbor! We could quietly ignore each other for years, as it should be.

(Thinking about this some more, I wonder if it's just that he's linked to GCC in my brain now, and I definitely check out whenever GCC shows up on screen.)

I see what you mean wrt Guo Changcheng, and yeah, I didn't like Guo Changcheng or anything to do with him, but Chu Shuzhi had enough going on outside that (he was worried the Envoy would be lonely!) that I can ignore it and wallow in my Chu feels.

Parts of it can be explained by the "dresses in black" thing (which I don't like and I already know that is never a popular opinion) and the moronsexual thing, and of course the loyalty thing (which I also know is not a popular opinion, but it's compounded here by not getting enough background for where his loyalty for the BCE is coming from, tbh).

Right! The weird thing is that I absolutely loathe Xiao Guo in the drama, because he really is annoying. But in the novel, where he is described as even more pathetic, I pity him - because the other characters treat him so badly. Every single scene is designed to maximize their abuse of Xiao Guo, and that's just terrible. (But I'm glad they made the other characters nicer in the drama, at least.)
